Newsletter August, 2017 Print

President's Report

Welcome to The Connection, SCIHRA’s latest and greatest newsletter!  Regular, clear, and consistent communication is an important tool, particularly in HR.  So with that premise in mind, going forward you will be receiving a quarterly, electronic newsletter as a means to better communicate, share information, and stay in closer contact with all of our members outside of monthly chapter meetings.

Summer zipped by quickly as the SCIHRA Board of Directors spent time strategically planning for the chapter, and began looking toward 2018.  Budget prep, SHAPE, and succession planning were the primary areas of focus.  Succession planning is on-going process for our chapter; board elections are scheduled for October.  At the same time, SCIHRA shifted to a new HR platform , moving away from MemberClicks and starting fresh with Star Chapter.  (In reminder, if you haven’t had a chance to log in to SCIHRA.org, SCIHRA’s new website, and update your profile, including a recent photo, I encourage you to do that soon!)

August is a busy month as we get ready to move into fall, and look forward to the Indiana State HR Conference.  Have you registered?  Visit this link:    http://www.hrindianaconference.org  for more information or to register to attend, exhibit, or sponsor if interested. This year the conference will again be held at the JW Marriott Hotel in downtown Indianapolis.

As always, there is a fabulous line-up of speakers and concurrent sessions. You’ll encounter opportunities to be inspired by fellow attendees by learning about their best practices and successes.  Highlights include fantastic speakers such as:  Peyton Manning, Dan Heath, Cy Wakeman, Anucha Browne and Ken Yerkes.  Attending this conference is a great opportunity to enjoy three premium days of learning and earn up to 16 PDCs from SHRM Certification and/or 16 CEUs from HRCI.

Jump start your conference experience by visiting the 2nd annual student Conference on Sunday, August 27th , hosted by  Cheryl Hughes and Becky Goldy, featuring Karl Alrichs.

For those members who are attending, iVolunteer is up and running. Chapter members who volunteer at the conference earn revenue for SCIHRA from the Indiana State Council of SHRM.  Chapter members are encouraged to sign up early and sign up often J.  Simply go to http://indianashrm.ivolunteer.com/hrindiana_2017  to sign up.  Be aware that volunteering is only available to registered conference attendees, however.

Many opportunities remain to support this conference, and in doing so, you support SCIHRA.  Volunteering can be a fabulous experience.  It’s a great way to network and make new friends and connections.  Get the bug by finding something that you really like to do…and do it!

Additionally for those attending, there will be an Indiana State Chapters’ Cocktails & Connections Event on Tuesday evening, hosted by the Indiana State Council of SHRM District Directors of the Southern, Mid-East, and Northern Regions.  All are welcome to attend! This event begins at 5pm on Tuesday, August 29th and will be held outside the Main Ballroom at the JW Hotel. Appetizers and drink tickets will be provided for attendees; there will also be a cash bar. Registered conference attendees should RSVP to Join the Fun by going to https://indyshrm.formstack.com/forms/hr_indiana_networking_event_2017

I hope to see you at the conference!

I-9 News

The federal government released a new Form I-9 July 17. To prove eligibility to work in the U.S, new hires must complete an I-9 and provide their employers with the identification it requires.  According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the agency made a handful of changes to both the instructions and the form itself. Most notably, it added a form of ID (consular report of birth abroad) to the list of documents acceptable to show work eligibility.  Employers may start using the new form immediately, but must make the switch before Sept. 18.

Finally, the new form comes only months after employers had to adopt the previous version. USCIS’ last I-9 came out in November and employers were required to start using it in January. That form will now expire on Sept. 17; employers may wish to make the switch sooner, however, especially if they will be shifting from the paper form to the electronic version.

Board Nominations

President-Elect and Secretary are on the slate for this year’s board election.  Please be thinking about any one you would like to nominate or if you would like to nominate yourself.  Look for the e-mail in September and the voting ballet to come out in October.
